Very nice clue, Mr. Fernfinder. Thanks to the dashing skyewalker (he did claim to be) for officiating and to ginge, stevea, and dorrien for the much-appreciated mentions.

Hi pigale
There are about 85 species in Britain, plus hybrids. We've seen all the species, but not all the hybrids.
However there are far more world-wide. She has seen and can identify hundreds; I can identify maybe a dozen!

Chris @41. The phenomenon is very rarely seen as far south as we are, just north of Glasgow. I've only ever seen it once. (Or maybe it's just the light pollution).

I suspect, sw, that Chris thought as I once did, that Skye referred to the place and not your dog. Can the Northern Lights be seen more often from Skye ?
I went on a Hurtigruten vogage once just to see them, and on just one night they appeared. I thought my hot tub on an open deck at minus 14 (including wind chill) was just as memorable!

I did know that Skye was a dog, rosalind, but I also remembered that SW lived in Scotland.

Skye is on a similar latitude to Aberdeen and there is a song "The Northern Lights Of Old Aberdeen" so I imagine they probably do see it reasonably often.
