11 is one that I haven't fully parsed, though I suspect the "box" is the first 5 letters.

First 5 letters are the box, second 5 letters are the usual reference to The Guardian, translated into French and reversed.

What is the "Five" doing. Neither 5a or 5d seems to have any relevance.

10a - the answer = on ("It's .......") and Chambers also gives 'fashionable, up to the minute'

4d - completely agree, can't see the point of 'five' other than to make a more complete surface.

Could you give me gentle hints (not solutions) for 7d and 12a please so I can get on with my weekend?

7d includes a specific philanthropist (originally associated with computers, in fact)

12 Fishwife is misdirection; read it as fish wife. The wife is a historical figure.

7d philanthopist is 5 letters, A at the front and usual 2 letters for computing inside... defn = proves perturbing

12a 4 letter heavy metal in the middle... maestri is the defn

10a the five letters are hidden in the clue
