The BARK clue is really confusing though isnt it---You are probably right with XYLEM, but what on earth is the connection there.

Well, if you go inwards through a tree, you go through bark, phloem, cambium and then xylem. Compiler error, I expect!

That's just reminded me of a story from years ago. I friend and I went into a familiar pub in south London. The lounge bar had been redecorated since out previous visit, with one wall "wallpapered" in cork. We complimented the barmaid on this. She replied
"Yes, it's very nice, but it's not real cork, though - it's made from the bark of trees."
