Chrise and jazzgirl, many thanks. I had 16 d wrong which explains both the missing theme and the parsing problem. Have it now though. Can go shopping!

I've got the SW corner done despite the fact that I have no idea of 13a. Accountant and bishop meet outside front of Abbey (4,7) I only have the N as the 4th letter. Accountant could be CA, Bishop could be B, RR, DD, the whole thing might be the name of a linguist. I'm just lost. Hints -- big ones -- would be nice.

The bishop is B. It's not a person's name; it's a (derogatory) term for an accountant.
