Finished but a struggle. Very rewarding by the end.
Only one small issue that I cannot resolve. I need an "i" as the extra letter from 21 down. I have an answer that does not seem to need an extra letter to be omitted (a word meaning bum and display). I am sure the word in the grid is correct as I need the circled last letter to spell the questioner and the other letters fit.
Can anyone explain?

Wow. I found this a really hard puzzle but thanks to all the helpful clues from you all I have got to a completed grid and highlights. I know the missing words and the riddles but I cant see how to generate c*******e and s****r from the clues. Help with this will allow me to move on with my life.

They are formed from the letters of the real answers mixed up Catkin.

36a The definition is sense of purpose. Four letter word for dreadful, plus a six-letter word for battle with the initial letter A removed.

2d The definition is please. Four letter word meaning meadows inside two-letter ISO code for Peru
