Didn't a character in "So long, and thanks for all the fish" have an "anti-room"?

I've a memory of reading somewhere about a man who sat inside a square of "outsides" of buildings, with the "outsides" of these decorated as "insides". It might not have been Douglas Adams, though. I've got the book upstairs - I'll have a look after cooking and eating.

Back again.. DuckB, I have just had a look and it was 2012 when we first "met" on this forum. How time flies. It was the Radio Times thread, where quite a few of us RT-ers used to have lovely chats and wonderful anecdotes from dear old old Pipesmoker :)
