Can anybody give me any help to get started? I don't really under the last bit of the instructions (the bit starting NB) I don't know where to start!

I'll add this link in case someone can help you - It's not a puzzle I do.

The NB bit seems superfluous to me - these two word splits are given after the clues as normal. To get you started - the solutions to the twelve clues with no definition e.g. 1ac, 2dn fall into two groups which, once you solve them, will give you 23and 25.

OK, ground to a halt. All complete apart from the SE quadrant where all I have are the letters in 13D. I have 9 of the 12 'special' solutions. I've worked out 23/25 and also the 2 other "possible locations", although I'm missing the last 3 letters of the first and the last 2 letters of the second.

I'm guessing that 28A, 20D and 21D will be the remaining 3 of the 12 'special' solutions. Could anyone confirm that please?

I have an answer for 19A but have no idea how to parse it.

Finally, to kick-start my solving could someone please give me a HINT (NOT the answer) to 24A?

28 A and 20 D are special, my 21 D isn't.
24 A. Ash is a tree.

My last special is 20 and the only one I can find is a relative but I can't make her fit the clue. Have I got the correct one?

Ignore that, it seems to be what I first thought it must be but couldn't find.
