Another one that's rather struggle!

However I've reduced it to the bottom right corner, where I still have a few posers:

49A - Single-handed, US Navy specialist joins battle: a star! (8, 4)
?O?O?O?? ????

37D - During miniature escapade request poem (2, 1, 7)
T? ? ?K?????
&
38D - on behalf of old teacher, appeal rejected with greatest force (10)
???T?????O

Assistance with these may help me with the remainder

& while typing that reply Chrisg supplies my missing one.

Chrisg, thanks!

I'm assuming that somewhere there is a star of this name.

Incidentally, does anyone know what has happened to the Chambers site? It doesn't appear to be functioning at present.

VENUS fits but not clear why

Not happy with the homophone in 40a
Spins a good look, they say (10)
Being a Wiltshire girl, gander does not sound like ganda !
