@tanglewood
I agree that hints for Prize crosswords are preferable (as, in fact, I asked for). However it's not compulsory to read the thread. I never look at a thread on a crossword I'm doing until I've either finished or got completely stuck.

Unlike most of you I don't start the cryptic until late afternoon and then have to break off to cook dinner and watch Beck on television. Like Chrise, I don't look at the forum until I've finished or got stuck.

I've had difficulty finishing today; problems with the north east corner, but thanks to zozozo, I got 9ac and 7d. This meant I could finish with 5d and12ac. But I can't parse either of them. What is the motherless cat in 5d?
I'm assuming Bridges is the definition for 12ac, but have no idea why.

Although I solved all the rest I do not understand what the definition is for 8ac and had no idea what the word is for last rites in 27ac. It was a new one on me.

Sorry I'm too late to help anyone else.

Hi roof

I'm equally baflfled by the "motherless cat" in 5d (though I loved the one in 3d!).

12a refers to Robert of that ilk I think.
