I feared I might be back again......

My shortfall is now reduced to three :

30A - Young journalist sending spy after Pope (6, 4)
?D???N ?O?E

35A - Singular, blue twinkling effect used in film (4-2)
?L?W-??
&
31D - Wryly amusing press piece oddly ignored (6)
????I? (suspect this is IRONIC) but this doesn't help with the other two it crosses)

Malone,

Many thanks for these. Yes, I should have thought of A MOLE, but although I had got as far as guessing the Pope, I was obsessed with NOSE for SPY & couldn't think straight.

Can't help thinking that 2D is an Americanism too far.....

Bear, glad I could help. I've just checked Chambers and it doesn't have Sunday Go... as being American. I looked the phrase up online and it seems to have been around for a long time. One dictionary website described it as 'dated' and I think (if I read it correctly) it was first used in the 1830s.

I remember my grandmother, dob 1890, using the expression "Sunday go to Meeting", she also used some expressions that will never appear in the Times cryptic and brought reprimands from my mother. Grannie was an ex-music hall dancer, very disreputable!
