I agree with comments about 17a (should be SN) and 1d (should end MNT), this really should have been sorted out at the checking stage. Otherwise, I found this very easy - downloading it at 4pm yesterday, I'd done it by 6, my earliest ever. A lot of very easy clues, and not much wit needed to realise how to enter the answers.

On reflection Dylan I'm wondering if it more to do with the literal pronunciation, as I think most people pronounce Essen more as Ess-n than Ess-En. Similarly in 1d the second appearance of ENT would be more of an 'NT' than 'ENT' if you get my drift. Past caring now anyway!

S_pugh, you are right. The E in the -ENT ending is pronounced as schwa so EN should not be represented as N in the puzzle. Ditto with the EN of ESSEN.

If the rule is that replacements are made precisely when the phoneme matches the real pronunciation of the letter then 32d is not justified (my Chambers has a long E there) and I do not believe the answer to 42acr is pronounced so that the letter U is named (a long U vowel sound does not match the name of U
