The penny has dropped.
I never learn, do I.
I always understand "cycling" as "reversed", and I only realise my mistake hours later.
Thank you prospero, teenieleek and trevor for your invaluable help.

'top over tail' is a better description - these last two felt almost like a different setter from the rest to me.

Done now - thought it was a satisfying slow burner. Nice one, impaler.
One thing I'm not sure about, if anyone can help (without giving any solution away, obviously):-
Does 8D furnish half the definition (along with10A) for 9A & 27D ?
Didn't seem quite right to me.

Thanks ixion. I had29D as half the definition for 14D & 17D, but it makes more sense this way round - i.e.
10A/29D defining 9A & 27D and
15A/8D defining 14D & 17D
