I agree with angst re 27A. Still can't see it despite Suilven's hint.

I think the problem with this crossword is that in order to make identical clues work for different answers the setter is forced into extra or over-specific wording - most obvious in 15 where I take the empty nut to be superfluous. (He might more concisely have said I get books - capital).
So here lodging (which could more elegantly have been housing) is superfluous and have (which seems to be an anagrind, combined with the question mark) is really uncomfortably stretched.
(I've tried every way to use the code tags to get italics but they won't work for me.)

In 27ac, the first 4 words are the definition. The second word of the answer is the anagrind for the first word of the answer. In 27ac, the "somewhat sequentially" is simply the letter S, "lodging" in a 4 letter word for "leave" to give you "have life". It's actually one of the better clues.

peterm means 28ac in his 3rd sentence. Yes, technically the anagrind is the second word of the answer - the material for it is the last word of the clue. I still maintain "lodging" and "have" are weak links, forced on the setter by the demands of 28 (cf 12/15 and other clues). But it's a fun idea and Geniuses are there to explore new modes.

I agree with you prospero. A number of the clues have been made far too tortuous in order to fit the duplicated-clue theme. I found this one of the oddest Geniuses (Genii?) for a long time.

Hi all.
just got back to this Genius. Thought it was fairly uncomplicated at first. Got nearly everything EXCEPT
8a _ (E or U) _ I _ E _ depends on 4d for which I have 2 possibilities.
25a N _ _ _E _ S third letter possibly W -- definition = Novelty ?
17d I M P _ _ _ S _ fifth letter possibly W -- homophone for "bad"?
Any confirmations or pointers would be much appreciated.
Happy New Year to all ----- Dizoz

25a yes W is correct and novelty is the defn
17d S is wrong W is correct

Many thanks, Sudokulover.
For 4d - not familiar with those Chronicles :-) - confirmed 8a also.
Had alternatives for 17d and for 27a , although the one I favoured parsed fairly well if definition was first word.
Much appreciated.. dizoz
