No, I agreed with your musings, Rusty - I think we're so used to thinking of Chambers as the Bible (!) for solvers. Maybe it's just ONE of the Bibles for setters?

As I said in post 28, My Oxford dictionary gives the two words as being synonymous, but it doesn't really make sense? because that would then mean that prebendary also means "a share of revenues allowed to a clergyman" - it cannot mean both?

I read it/understood it as the word 'prebend' can mean the same as the word 'prebendary', ie a person/clergyman. I didn't take it as 'prebendary ' can mean the same as prebend', in its meaning of 'share of revenues...'. I don't feel they're synonyms.

Maybe I have it wrong, Malone, but if it says prebend = prebendary........?
Anyway, do we really care!
Happy Christmas!

Elle, under clergy.
She also has, "Rome-runner", "Sky pilot" and "Vartabed"?
I think I will investigate the last one!

Under "clergy", Rusty, I have Road- runner , Sky- pilot, and Vartabed but NOT God- botherer in my version!
Amazing how these definitions vary from edition to edition , isn't it? We have come across this before!
I have encountered "sky -pilot " a number of times in crosswords.
