For what it's worth, AJT, I have been through exactly the same thought process and am left with the same nagging question. WANDA is certainly the answer required, but it's not 'of a kind' at all. Even allowing for 'left field' thinking etc. Sorry, but this isn't vintage Araucaria. Not worthy of a bank holiday prize puzzle in my opinion.

Good morning Bathtub - you're an early bird. Thanks for that. If you look under another thread with my initials - AJT - you will find that Don- found that Wanda is a river in Taiwan. Certainly rather "left field" as it was the only river. I was rather disappointed with the xword, given that it was an Easter offering: I metaphorically rubbed my hands with glee when I saw that it was by Araucaria, but found it quite easy and disappointing.

Thank you GCD - It must be Wanda, whatever the reasoning.

Re Wanda - she was a Polish queen who drowned herself to save Poland - still doesn't quite fit, as she did drown.

Its certainly wanda, a fish can't drown, and there is a primula called wanda. Not a good link really but thats the solution. I vave one more to get, 33d irish ?r?s, whats that and how does it fit the clue?
