Actually, in medical usage, symptoms are distinct from signs - signs are what the doctor can ascertain from examination, tests, etc.; symptoms are what the patient tells the doctor about how he/she feels.

Symptom also shown as
a physical or mental feature which is regarded as indicating a condition of disease, particularly such a feature that is apparent to the patient.
"dental problems may be a symptom of other illness"
synonyms: manifestation, indication, indicator, sign, mark, feature, trait;

Chambers shows symptom as
"A characteristic sign or indication of the existence if a state"

Yes, I did say "in medical usage". Another example of a distinction being blurred in "general speak". In particular it would have been easy for the writer of the quotattion to get it right:

"dental problems may be a sign of other illness"

I'm biased here, of course. My wife is an ex-GP, and would never tolerate signs and symptoms being confused with each other!
