Just read the latest posts, and remembered the old British car mentioned. But that still leaves the 'm' in the same place, even if one could parse it.

btw I wondered about 18 as (8) rather than (2,6) - however online it'sone word, with a capital letter for the third.

mamya - that's good enough for me ;-)

18ac 'd' is wrong; 21ac 's' is wrong. 18ac fits the theme - 88mph might be a hint. 21ac ends in 'sm'.

The other make of car I was thinking of was Humber.

chrise - I'm gutted with the Wales result as well. I was born and brought up in Cardiff; left many years ago to live &

work near London - stil not sure I did the right thing!

Thanks, chrise. Careless in jumping to conclusion rather than working out the anagram properly. I had dean in my mind for the college official from the beginning, but couldn't fit in the rest.

1d Car upset Muhammad Ali's boxing? (4)
Hard to give a hint - read the clue whichever way you can.

As to origin "sounds like you may be in a hurry to get into it"

Jadzia, I was trying to say it's written backwards in the clue - but probably being too obscure.

This cross word has made me ponder the nature of general knowledge. Dad's Army actors, Arsenal footballers fine but cars!
Please could someone tell me the nationality of the cars so I can direct my googling appropriately?
I have *R *S *** for 8 across and I can actually think of an American make that fits but it doesn't have st in it for street and their is nothing vigorous about its envelope. *i** *** t for 15 across, 6 down; *a** for 1 down; precious little for 17 across and down, though I am guessing a po or op start. I'd never heard of 16 across but there isn't much else it could be once you have e+s*l and I have 18 across, strangely, one of the first clues I got in the whole puzzle. Apart from that my puzzle is, like Bristol city centre on one Sunday afternoon a month, a car-free zone. Help please.
