I'm struggling to get started - any hints for H across and S across? Thanks!

Got the B - it's an animal I hadn't heard of (I was fixated on "Sarum" for Salisbury).

The S across is often canned.

The H needs a translation from French.

I'm going crazy- if s is a common tinned fish then it doesn't work because the r down would only have 8 letters not 9. Am I missing something?

I'm not sure of the parsing of the first part of H but I had H-N-R-I- so only one word seemed possible especially as the last four letters make a form of transport. Am I right?

Read "main" as a French word.

Hello - I've completed (with many thanks to previous hints from others in this thread) and have sent off to The Guardian. I do that quite regularly but have yet to 'come out of the bag'. Although, of course "It's taking part, not the winning, that counts".
