You are right. Dottir indicates 'daughter of' and sson indicates 'son of'.
In Iceland the surname of every child is based on this. The parent's first name is used as a prefix, so Herval's son has the surname Hervalsson and his daughter Hervalsdottir. This applies when the parents are married. If the parents are not married, the mother's name is used, so unmarried Helga's son has surname Helgasson and her daughter Helvasdottir. Therefore children don't have the same surname as their parents - or their different gender siblings. They also keep them after marriage.
This used to get tricky in the 1970s when married couples travelled abroad and wanted a shared room in a hotel but had passports with different surnames!
This was the case in the 1970s but may have changed now.
I believe that elsewhere in Scandinavian countries children inherit their father's surname.

I have been investigating the Swedish and Norwegian surnames.
Apparently, in 1901, Sweden passed a law stating surnames would have to be hereditary and passed on to the next generations, rather than the patronymic names that were in use up to then.
Norway passed a similar law in 1923.
There are still an enormous amount of "son" suffixes but few "dottir" suffixes.
Wonder why?

I am surprised you had not heard of DH Lawrence....I know you do not like reading fiction....but I would have doubted that anyone of our age would not have heard of "Lady Chatterley's Lover"?
And DH Lawrence also wrote other well -known novels such as "Sons and Lovers", "Women in Love", and "The Rainbow".
There are others, but I think these would probably be ranked as the most famous?
Some very good films resulted , too, based on some of these books.

On the other hand, as the Scandinavians take the father's surname, most fathers are sons!

Yes, Lara got a right clatter, but better flattening the photographers than hitting the trees!
Most of the Alpine skiers are carrying knocks etc., including Lindsey Vonn.
It's just the nature of the sport.
Falls can and do happen.
I just hope the wind does not spoil the event.

We are being extremely fortunate...again, blue skies and sunshine.

I have only been as far as the garden this morning........my husband is still asleep!
I could have taken the dog out myself, but that adds two miles pounding of pavement on to my overall walk!

I have not seen the skiing, but it is a complete outsider who won the Giant Slalom.

I hadn't heard of her before.
Lindsey Vonn made a mistake and almost crashed but finished 6th.
Tina Weirather was third.
I like Tina.
Her Mum is the great Alpine skier of a few years ago, Hanni Wenzel.
Her Dad, Harti, was a great skier, too.
Eve Muirhead and rink have beaten Denmark and play Korea later today.
They are going along nicely, but the crowd will be against them today!
