My favourite along those lines is the Groucho Marx quote:

One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got into my pajamas I'll never know.

Quoting from the Oxford dictionary grammar section.....
A participle is a word formed as an inflection of the verb, such as arriving or arrived.
A dangling participle is one which is left 'hanging' because , in the grammar of the clause, it does not relate to the noun as it should.

The "dangling" modifiers and participles are under the same grammatical "umbrella" then ? Looking back, we had this discussion on the forum some time ago

Yes, and stubbornly going back to the mohagony table,
I can't even see a verb - 'mahogany table' acts as a complement of
the expression 'for sale'.
Or is it me?

No, it isn't you, Pigale!
"For sale: mahogany table by lady with Chippendale legs" is not an example of a dangling participle.
There is no participle in the sentence (dangling or not)
(It is more along the lines of Chris' joke about Groucho Marx and elephants!)

I've already agreed about my error (see post 15178) but the type of error comes under the same kind of grammatical "umbrella" . I am off to get some fresh air

Good afternoon, Rusty!
Are you home again now?
Did you enjoy your outing to the Pine Cone with Miss O?
Were there still road works?
Or did you have a straight run this time?
I thought today's 15 x 15 a good one?
I have a couple of queries though.......
Why does 5a say "sons" rather than "son"?
The plural to me implies more than one "s"?
And in 9d; should the musical note be spelt "ti" or "te"?
"Te" is required today...but the other spelling of "ti" was what was wanted only the other day?
Now, I cannot parse 6d?
One risking knockout given big drink reported a better roll (7-8)
I have "quarter- finalist" = one risking knockout (definition)
I can see "quart" for "big drink"....but nothing else?
I hope I am not spoiling your own Xword, by asking questions too early?

Hello, Elle!
Had a smashing time, thank you.
No, there had been a stone wall which was in a dangerous condition, was why the road was closed.
5a, Elle, I have came across this before, when "s" was used for sons and have no answer for you just now.
But I shall investigate.
9, Possibly musical notes can be spelled in different ways?
Now, the "quarter finalist" took me ages to get and I am raging at the parsing.
You are correct with the drink "quart",
The "roll" will be a "list".
Leaving "erfina".
I am guessing the setter thinks fina sounds like "finer" for better.
We'll give him that.
Leaving "er".
Does er sound like "a"?
"A better roll."
"A finer list"
"Er fina list".
I think the setter is a chancer if that is what his clue means?
What do you reckon?

Update, Elle!
Chambers gives "s" for "son(s)".

Hi, Rusty!
Uhm........ okay, I can certainly go with "roll" meaning "list"...although I would never have got it!
And by a wide stretch of imagination....and a slight distortion of the eardrums..... maybe "fina" could pass for "finer" (altho not the way I speak!)
But "er" sounding like "a"...?
And yet, I think you are correct in thinking this is where the compiler is coming from?
I think you are brilliant to have come up with this!
I have been puzzling all the morning!
So what did you think of 24 down, then?
Another Cockneyism......sort of !
I know you don't do the QC, but there were also two homophones in there.
Did you see my earlier post about on screen TV guides.... I didn't go back to bed!
But brain has hopefully engaged gear now!
And next week's Athletics coverage is all shown in the evening - so my daytime arrangements will not interfere with my viewing!
( My Chambers doesn't give that abbreviation of "s"!)
