Hello, Elle!
I just saw the curling!
Eve and rink won and are now leading overall.
No, you are perfectly correct about the book.
I barely remember it, but books like "Alaska" and "Centennial" are fixed in my brain.
And the short stories, like "Until They Sail".
He wrote several stinkers, too, in my opinion.
One about an old folks home in Florida was hard going for me.
And "Space" I could not grasp.
All about black holes and "matter" and "cosmos" for hundreds of pages.
I gave up on it and slung it.
I detect a blue sky outside.
In the battle between the sun and mist, the sun is winning!

Hi, Rusty!
I am glad that you agree with me about "Hawaii" - I do not think that I am being judgemental here....I am not narrow -minded and fully understand that these were the customs of the times but that doesn't necessarily mean that I want to read about them.
I didn't look into what the book was about before buying it, but chose it because, at the time, it was the least inexpensive on offer!
That'll "larn me"!
I came back to the Everyman and finished it straight off......part from one parsing I'm not convinced about......
Still, it gives me something to wallow over....!
Still windy, still raining , very black sky...we shall have to go out sometime, but will give it up until 2 o'clock and see how it goes........
Haven't even been out for the Sunday Times!

Hello, Elle,
Quite!
I felt troubled reading about incest, too.
I am perfectly happy to be ignorant of these things.
Maybe you should abandon the book?
I felt the same about "Caribbean".
The Caribs went in for cannibalism and I could do without that.
In "Mexico", too much human sacrificing going on.
But, Michener is telling it the way it was.
It is not Walt Disney tales.
I think something like "Poland" or "Iberia" would appeal to you, perhaps, or "Caravans".
I have not read "The Source", which is about the Holy Land.
It is a great day here, but frost not lifting.
And Miss O has just invited me for lunch on Tuesday!
Isn't it a wonderful world!

Hi, Rusty!
I shall consult with you before I buy my next Michener saga!
But no, I shall finish "Hawaii".
I can accept that this is the way it was....
(Wasn't there a Barbra Streisand film entitled "The Way We Were"?
A nice film. I enjoyed it!)
I only made my comment to point out that I am glad that I read the other books first.........I really enjoyed both of those, especially "Centennial".
That is good to be going out for lunch with Miss Orlando!
You shall look forward to it!
Still dreich here but I think the wind is lessening....we are going to go out anyway........the dog needs a walk!
Back in a bit!

Hi, Rusty!
Did you manage to get out for a walk?
The wind and the rain both ceased when we went out!
We timed our walk very well.
But my goodness, there are leaves everywhere!
I had noticed that the leaves had accumulated in the back garden - every leaf left remaining on a tree had come down in the storm.
But I hadn't bargained for the appearance of our street!
We are almost ankle deep in leaves!
All the trees lining the street have shed their remaining autumnal leaves and we now have a wet soggy "mush" to walk through!
Only an hour now to the tennis......
( I hope my cousin doesn't phone before the end of the match!)

Hello, Elle!
No walk for me until the pavements are a tad more walkable!
Don't want to land on my butt!
Has your storm passed?
The Loch o' the Lowes folk are tweeting about Autumn evenings.
It is Winter evenings with me and I'm only a few miles from them!
Minus 1 just now.
I've ordered me a book.
"Tisha". About a girl who goes to the Alaskan wilderness to be a teacher.
Hope you enjoy the tennis, and good luck to Andy and Novak!

I spent an overnight in Anchorage, Alaska, en route to Tokyo. The views were amazing, hundreds of fir trees and snow-capped mountains. I know Albie (on this form) also went to Japan and wonder if he also stopped in Alaska. The Jumbo in which we were flying had a near miss with another Jumbo when landing on ice. Very scary. Enjoy the book, rusty. It sounds good

Thanks, Jazzgirl.
I have read quite a bit about Alaska.
The history with Russia etc
And the gold strikes etc
Not a place for the faint hearted!
I think "Tisha" was Anne Hobbs.
I am going to see if there is any info on Google about her.
That was quite an adventure you had with the flight!

I wrote a piece for the local paper on the experiences I had with that trip and found my original typed version of it the other day. I have been trying to find the article in google but no luck.

That is a pity, Jazzgirl!.
Bound to be somewhere in the ether?
One of the things I learned watching "Treasures of the British Library", was that they get a copy of every newspaper printed in the UK (and possibly Ireland) each day, and they are stored at Boston Spa, Yorkshire.
Wonder if they could help you?
