Cheers - how the hell did I miss that?

I can't remember when I last had so many "pencilled in" as I'm not convinced that they are right. One in question is 17a

From "sheets" and the crossers it looks like BED LINEN, but I have no idea why. Is this right, and if so, what is the parsing?

Well I now have a complete grid, but question marks over 4 more. I'll wait to see if anyone else asks about them, though.

The last one in for me is 1a "'Firing line in range, the soldier at the front makes advances" (6)

I've got ?L?R?S and so FLIRTS would fit for advances, but am stumped at parsing this; or alternatively I'm up the completely wrong tree
