Presumably, one submits the full original answers, i.e., GUARDIAN not GURDIN

I'd say one has to submit the resulting "words" (GURDIN if we follow your example). What's entered in the grid is the only thing that matters.

Agree Manu, otherwise they won't know you've solved the puzzle.

is an AcrossLite file I made. Should be right and prints out nicely (with instructions).

Got a few solutions.
Question is - is word with letter removed a true word or a non-word or an anagram? I have not a clue as to the theme (and therefore no idea of which letter has to go).
I also note that clue for 18a has 2 more letters than spaces in grid. Open to comment :-) ..

The answers one submits are just strings of letters, and do not make a word. As the answer to that question is two letters short, then two of a particular letter have to be omitted. But where can we get a form to submit? The ones I have seen all omit some of the answers, e.g., 14A and 18A.

I think I may actually have solved this monster! But I'm not so confidant with the parsing of 4d and 17d. Does anyone have any ideas for these two?
