I am having difficulty parsing 1 down, would appreciate assistance.
Area in a slow-moving boat up country (9)
I think the answer is a country in Central America bordered by Mexico to the north and west, the slow boat being a tug but need clarification if anyone can assist.

Could slow moving be "lame"?

I think the slow moving = the four letter word, reading backwards towards the end of your answer. Area is one 'a' and 'a' in the clue is the other.

Hope I have not made it too easy!

Glad we could be of help. I'm not sure of the conventions associated with some crosswords, so was trying to be slightly elliptical/enigmatic!

I have a word meaning "god-fearing", but don't see the rest (my answer might be wrong here!)

Any suggestions?

If the officer is a CO, removed from a word meaning liberal?

As you say , anagram of 4 letters - then a 2 letter word for a 'thing' - then 'first' (think numerically) turned.
