Down to last two, both themed.
16A I am fairly sure the solution is a 9 letter word, half the title of a famous novel which goes with the entry, but can't work out why.
27A Have E-I- but stuck on clue.
Hints much appreciated

Thanks SL. Finished now after your hint. Never come across 'hired' as a pointer to include a word before.
One of the trickiest genii I've come across.

Hello from France,
first post here.
I'm stuck on the very last clue. No one has mentioned it yet (must be dead easy then), so I already feel like a complete fool for not getting it.
5 across (novel set in mess). I have always assumed it was ma(ste)r but no appropriate partner fits the grid.
Besides, given the letters already in the grid, I can't seem to find any word that would fit any decent pairing (master or not).
Hint, please.

Sorry - I read too quickly and didn't notice you'd asked for a hint.

Thank you Malone,
don't worry. It's a relief. I was miles away from the solution. Now it's all clear.
