I've looked again - sorry, it was 13a that is the American one; 23 was English.

My last two to solve are 27 and 28 which I assume are themed but I can't find them in the wiki list of ventriloquists and dummies. 27. R?e? and 28, ?R?L?L?
Any hints please?

Themed answers are:
5, 10/29, 13, 23 & 29/10.

4 are British; 1 from USA.

27 - the inlet is what you could be up without a paddle.

28 - very well known novelist with last letter missing; "drab" is apparently old term for the answer.

PS - just realised the last "L" in your answer to 28 is incorrect. 22d is an anagram of "more by."
