It took me a while - I now wonder whether the clue should have included a reference to 8 or American 8.

French possessive, french life, south plus 4 interspersed learners - I am not sure south of France is properly in the right order for the solution but it is close enough, I suppose and it would not make sense inverted.

This was my last answer on Saturday, not helped by the fact that it doesn't appear in Chambers Word Wizard (even if I put all the letters in except one, so it's definitely not there). I got the answer without it, eventually!

I thought all answers would be in Chambers - ?

I had the answer although I wasn't 100% sure of the parsing. I think Jazzy was spot on

Thanks SL but I use the online word wizard, and I assumed that had any word which is in Chambers.
