Yes, mamya, that's sadly very true. I've seen a heron swoop down and take a ducking from the 'train' following 'mum', and the mother duck sailed on regardless.
The coots make good parents though - very protective towards their young - usually one parent swims ahead of the brood, and the other brings up the rear - and woe betide any prospective aggressor!

All very interesting, but do we all think that "gander" is the answer to 20d? Duck with you on land, might you say.
Apparently Disney has duck called gander duck, related to Donald.

I like the explanation about Uganda.
