i'm way behind AB, i also thought 2 was weak (my last one in).

All clues involving Tory, Conservative, Lib-Dem and other British pols are a real challenge for this Canadian. Authors are usually not so bad but I'm blocking on this one.

And why is 22ac ANIMAL? "Backplate for armadillo, perhaps"

Lamina is some kind of plate and it's animal backwards
AMEN, it is so, has first letters of amazing making egg noodles..

Animal backwards is lamina, a thin layer of bone etc.
