I cannot find a Jane Austen heroine to fit this - barking up the wrong tree

This one was a write-in for me, after solving 1ac.

It was the one I struggled with.

In fact, although I am a great "Jane" fan, I would exclude this book.

I am more James Herbert than Jane Austen.

I have loved Jane Austen since seeing Laurence Olivier and Greer Garson in "Pride and prejudice" when I was about 8. Reading her just impressed me more - she wrote English as it should be wrote.

I realise that not many other boys/men might agree!

Oh gosh Chris, Greer Garson eh - what a beauty she was. I have read Jane but it is not my favourite genre.
