I can't get a solution for 2down (country favoured aid redistribution) that will also give me a first part for 1 across. Can 2 down begin with i as I'd like it to? Then what's b*I*** in 1 across?

Thanks Chrise. I just came back to say is found it. Was put off earlier by thinking only of Europe -- a common failing I think.

I see I'm not the only one missing our old friend today. I was preparing to eat lunch and look at the crossword, when I thought, "I wonder who the setter is today," then remembered sadly that it will never be Araucaria again.

Well we all feel the loss.
I have a couple of things left to resolve. First, for 29 across (Come on in -- coffee perhaps?) I have sweetener but can't parse it.
Next a quibble. 6 down is a wrongly pluralised word coming from Yiddish and resembling a collective noun like repertoire; it is plural with no S. Took me a long time to think of it because to me it's not a word.

Shorty. Just figured out sweetener.

Quite a poor crossword, indeed. Perimeter words being an unconnected list invalidates this puzzle, and makes me feel i've wasted my time on the (irritatingly easy) interior clues.
