Hi GK
I reckon that there are two ways of solving a clue.

1. Get the answer from the definition, then explain the word play ("top down")

2. Use the word play to produce and answer, then see if it matches the definition ("bottom up")

I think a good clue should be do-able in either direction.

(The terms derive from design.)

My son, at the age of four, loved that song and sang it all the time, even in the supermarket. I was glad when Super trouper took over!

With 7d "Right abandoning summit, as hellish" (5)

I've got A-F-L for which the only fit is AWFUL which gets hellish, but I can't see where the extra R would get you a summit

Any help greatly appreciated

Thank you for the explanation , Chris!
I'm sorry you didn't enjoy this one. Maybe I was just so relieved to find myself suddenly solving the whole thing in the middle of the night (I have to start early), my judg(e)ment became clouded & I now see everything looking back through rose-tinted spectacles. We have seen much worse from Paul, though.

I didn't exactly not enjoy it, GK - just thought that too much could be filled in by guessing a solution from a few letters and the word-lengths. It made the crossword too easy, especially for a Prize.

The Dylan Thomas quote during the week was similar.

Hi leapy
21a across is another "beheading" clue.
22d I think the reference is to electric motors.

What thrilling match are you watching, leapy? I'm watching a fairly incompetent performance by Italy v. Argentina. Perhaps the English game will be better.
