ChrisE is just saying he would spell it with the O if he was writing (apart from this crossword ) Chambers '72 shows Fetid as the first spelling and shows Foetid and Foetor as "less justifiable spellings". But I know that in later editions the O version has become more acceptable.

Just wondering where the O originates from. The Latin verb is Fetere (to stink). O I think I need breakfast :)

Jazzy: I think there is an "oe" in the Latin word, at least it's a long "e", so just an "e" in English doesn't (necessarily) imitate the same pronunciation.

Thanks GK. Too many years since my Latin lessons :(
The Chambers on my bookshelf shows only fetere, but I have now treated myself to the 12th edition which should arrive sometime today from amazon.

Thanks, jazzy, for explaining my position to chrisg
chris - botanical names use the oe spelling - e.g. Iris foetidissima.

I have done the lot and as you all seem to say, quite easy this week. However, I have TURIN for 6 down but can't parse other than it is a city, Can't find that it is also a Brewers Vat. anyone explain, or have I got it wrong?
thanks
Lilacwine.

I have a different city, lilacwine. Turin isn't a capital city.
The brewer's vat sometimes appears in pub names.
