Re Post 9: You don't know what you are? You seem to be confident in your studliness; I'd say go with that persona.

MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION

Les 40, why has no-one corrected the mistake in 13 Across?

A) Les double checks all anagram fodder and researches as much information as possibly with his time available, however, He trusts in his setters and felt that such a piece of specialised clue wordplay could be deemed as correct from a regular who has written many good quality clues in the past.

B) Les started this as a fun way for people to become more interested in sharing their clue writing artistry and gain some recognition for their proficient ability in word craft and to give a platform for people who are just getting into, and still learning - to hone their skills and receive feedback for their efforts (whether negative or positive but hopefully constructive) to better their own clue writing talents

C) Les creates the grid, fills the grid, announces the prep of the next publication for people to get involved, allocates the words to be clued, offers as much feedback as he can, helps tweak the clues for better surface reading, liaises with all setters to bolster good relations to keep up interest in the whole thing, deals with between 80 - 300 emails per issue (depending on size of grid), spends between 40 - 130 man hours per issue (depending on size and amount of clues) creates the artwork and types in all the clues for the final PDF, liaises with AB for the prep of the wordplay file, publishes all relevant PDF's for the forum to enjoy.
WHILST holding down a full time job, studying part time for essential qualifications to better his life, running a house on his own and giving some time up to spend with family and friends. So maybe he might miss the odd piece of wordplay that has a mistake because at the end of the day, he is only human.

D) Maybe... just maybe nobody noticed the slight mistake at 13 Across OR, maybe they did but because they appreciate and have a realisation of A, B & C, and thought it may be a tad pedantic to pull such a small mistake.

E) It's free and Les is not a professional editor or proofreader and never claimed to be, and would really appreciate it if when people notice a mistake in the Joint Effort, they don't ask in such a disrespectful way but instead, say, "Hey! Les, I've just noticed that 13 Across has a slight anomaly with the clue and where it says 'The Tenth, it should read as The eleventh because I've just checked it mate". To which Les would quite gladly reply, "Hey! Thanks pal, I'd missed that because I never checked it properly but thanks for letting me know and I'm sure the setter will comment and the other setters and solvers will appreciate your astute perception, thanks again and take care". Because we all enjoy a moment of satori from the clues.

G) What happened to F?

F) Ah! there you are

PS: You're not really Philip are you, back to bother people with inane crass verbosity

I once had someone tell me that I'd hit a wrong note (at a page turn) after I'd played seventy pages of music while directing a chorus, so I know how you feel. Rest assured that we all deeply appreciate the astounding amount of work you put into these, Les.

@Les, post 12

As they say in Parliament, for one's own side, "Hear, Hear!".

And to the other side, something like, "In my humble opinion, the Honourable Member's soliloquy would be barely worthy of a mere 'member' ... in Chambers." *

Don't sweat it. You know how grateful we all are for your hard work, & the fun it provides.

Cheers.

Hi Les,
I can't add anything to what has already been said but in restating "we" all very much appreciate the time and effort you (and ab) put in for our pleasure you both feel valued.
With reference to your post I hope you don't mind some slight criticism. If you had applied alliteration to your bullet points F wouldn't have been so elusive. Not your style mate but you must have been tempted!
Cheers,
ginge

That is a common form of address in many legislatures, especially those derived from the British model.
It is supposed to show respect, but in common practice is usually followed by a snide witticism casting aspersion upon the other member's speech, or character.

That's the point I was trying to make. Perhaps I was being too subtle.
"Chambers" can refer to legislatures or the dictionary.
Look up the reference at the asterisk.

Losing batsman gets flipped the bird.

Hi syzygy,
did get your point, just thought I'd accentuate the envisaged sneer during delivery!

What a great crossword the "Joint Effort" is.
I have many frustrating and enjoyable hours trying to "get into the minds" of all the setters.
Maybe one little "typo" made a one percent difference to an answer.
Who gives a toss ???
Maybe a tosser !!!!
Keep going Les40 & AB, and everyone else.
After all, it could have been something that was "lost in translation"
Keep smiling ... :-)

PS: Certainly not having a "dig" at a setter.
