Got there at last!
I think they mean the abb. for the metal shackles i.e. encloses the short word for "provided", so no problem!
Thank you & out! I need my bed!

Just back from shopping.

I have now worked out what 2D must be, but it conflicts with my 12A. I had an E in the second position of 12A, so I suppose it must be one of the pairing clues, which works out well enough.

So am I right that only one of 4D or 14A is a pairing clue, And is the latter a big film of the 60's?

Yes, 4dn is a normal clue and 14 was a film with a lot of eye liner. 25dn I have but don't understand - is it cricket related?

my 25d (grid entry probably the same as yours) could be rugby related?

I think 25D is rugby related...not entirely sure how it's meant to be parsed

I had a rugby-related answer, so it's a little "loose."

Sorry, that should be "seems a little loose."

Thanks, not over as I thought. It's What's ? (happening) and ? front. Doesn't matter really but I hate loose ends.

Ooof...finished..... at last. A struggle all the way, from the moment I tried to print out the puzzle, but couldn't. It wasn't made any easier by my putting the engineer in at 22d (a valid answer, I'd say, as the clue stands), and chucking in "AA Milne" on a wing and a prayer for 28a (which wasn't [a valid answer]). Still, all's wells that ends wells.
