Rosalind: Perhaps we use the term more often over here; I used BB as "shot" in my clue. When I was growing up it was every red-blooded American boy's dream to have a BB gun. :)

We used to play with 'Sekiden' guns in the UK in the 50's/60's. They fired plastic pellets shaped like ball bearings (possibly the term of 'bb')

Ah, that explains it! Am not a red-blooded American boy, nor knew/know any!
But I'm not likely to forget what BB's are now.
