Thanks - will see if that'll work with other clues/answers.

I am struggling with this one. I have letters in most of the cells, but am not happy. "Charioteers" seems to be the only fit for 7, and a number of the unclued entries appear to be members of the aristocracy who might ride in chariots, or something to do with horses. But don't find anything 'tranatlantic'...!

P>S> Sp: 'transatlantic'. And I am not saying my entries in the cells are correct, just guesses in the unclued ones!

Nikki - I'm in the same position as you (there is one other word that would fit for 7 down, but that would be even weirder than the one you've deduced if we're looking for themed clues).

I'm wondering if there is some poem, or passage in literature about a charioteer (US poet maybe?)that includes the unclued words.

For 25 ac again there are only two words that fit with my letters, but it hasn't led to a lightbulb moment.

Most frustrating.

I thought I'd just solved 20a, but it seems to conflict with the first 'r' of your charioteers? I've got titanate - tate being a small portion, ita a palm and n(uts) initially.

That looks good Iain - I wasn't too convinced by charioteers. Maybe 7 down is an American spelling of a word not included in Chambers.

Time for a rethink.

I had 'titanate' for the same reasons. And my 25a can only be 'flower' or 'footer'!
