i have now filled the grid but where do I find the 5 thematic items and the person? Are they hidden in the grid?

yes , work with what you've got and try to link them up in as long a line(cycle) as possible, then you should/ may be able to deduce the other 5 words you need.

Got it! (I hope) Only found one of the five, beginning with S between 18dn and 13dn and made a leap to someone with nasty political views. Am I correct please?
