All in good fun Rosalind, I gambled on you ladies seeing the humorous side of your grid title. It conjures up images of one of the men breaking in and throwing one of you over his soulder to take back to his territory.

There is loose reason beind the grid names.

We in "The Unveiled Contingent" all use our real names so are not hidden (I think we all do anyway, maybe not)

"The Foreign Legion" are our setters from far away shores.

"Men of Letters" are exactly what it says, men who's names are made up of letters on the site.

The "Nom De Plumes" are 4 of our AKA's (or only known as)

Hope you enjoy the "Gatekeepers". I have tried to emulate the styles of some of you guys with the wordplay and I guess there will be question marks for a couple, but rest assured, I can certainly back up each one with wordplay explanations later.

There are 160 clues in this one and take my word for it guys, there are some easier clues and some great middle ground testy penny droppers, but believe me when I say, there are some real toughies in it and a generous handful of downright stinkers. A good mixture across the board which will suit all levels and styles of solver.

Whoa! I can hardly wait. My laptop crashed on Thursday and I'm going to try to carve out several hours tomorrow to reset it to factory settings and re-install the programs and peripherals that had been on it before. If that works I'm going to treat myself to a crossword orgy. Thanks so much, Les. It looks quite daunting, but I'm sure it'll be a blast. I'm on a borrowed computer now and feel like stealing it. Best to all fellow setters!

I've tried to print this a few times and it's so faint I can't read it. I printed a test page and it's perfectly fine, so I'm wondering if there's something about the format that's causing the problem. Has anyone else experienced this?

You're the first to mention that aristo, I'm on the laptop at present so can't check it myself.
I have sent a copy of the file to your email in the last hour if you wanna try it direct from that, if that doesn't work, we'll have to try something else.

Thanks, Les. The same thing happened with that one. Since nobody else had this problem it's obviously the computer I'm using; what I don't get is why other things print normally. I'll have to figure it out tomorrow. You must need several days' worth of sleep now!
