1- SWIPE (S WIPE)
[SHARD (bit, scrap) also works (S HARD), but I'll go with the former]
2- AVAUNTS (boasts of old: def, VA in AUNTS)
3- ARENATION (anag of anoint ear)
4- LATHI (hidden)
5- LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION?

Hi Jolan

Good clues as always- I missed your trademark though!

My suggestions:

1- Swipe- first letter of snuff and then wipe (dry)
2- Avaunts- old word for boasts. First letters of very active in aunts.
3- Arenation- a treatment with hot sand, An anagram of anointear.
4- Lathi- an indian club I think- hidden in smiLA THis.
5- Lights, camera, action-use of shoot as on film set.

Better than today's Guardian- you should do this professionally!

All the best

DJA

Thanks for another set of challenging clues. I agree with DJA about your setting skills being the equal of many of
the established setters.
I seem to remember making the same point when you
first began 5@5.

Managed to get all five and hope to be 'see' you next week.

Brilliant guys and thanks Tony for the very kind remark (I remember). Nice to see you back here.

ab and dja 5/5; Rambler 4/5. Well done Jazzy [a police fan? :))], Trevor and RE.

I'll provide my working although no real need:-

1. snuff initially = s; dry = wipe; s + wipe = SWIPE = steal = pinch

2. relatives = aunts; very active beginners = v + a; a(va)unts = AVAUNTS (obsolete = of old) = boasts.

3. anag (another treatment to) of “anoint ear” = ARENATION = remedial application of (hot) sand (Chambers D)

4. it’s “in” there! LATHI = a long heavy stick used as a weapon (Chambers D). Additionally ‘lathi’ is of Indian origin and Simla (or Shimla) is in India.

5. (cryptic) LIGHTS CAMERA ACTION

Bless you all

See you next week

John
