39 A. I limited Scotsman's meal (7) s?a???n
33 A. Native Americans drooping with return of tailless skunk (6) ?a???a

The preamble says 'wordplay in each clue leads to the answer plus an extra letter.'
Thanks for any help.

33a I would think the tailless skunk is either ATO[C or K] and Indians ?A?OTA !!

Are you sure about the S in 39 across as it looks like it should be a type of meal/restaurant/language?

I think that you are right with your answer but not quite with reasoning - LA[N]K + ATO< (tailless skunk) the N being extra.

I really have no idea how this sort of crossword works, but do you think #39 could be SPARTAN / TARTAN?

Thanks, everyone -- I got called away and have only just returned to this. Thanks for the help - my next task is to fix the mistake that led me to having an 's' at the start of 39 A.

I have filled in the grid but am struggling with the phrase made by the extra letters.
