I've a great sense of deja vu on this crossword - I'm sure I've solved it before and not that long ago - but it doesn't seem to be in the Guardian archives

Still not that easy to start with but romped through the last clues

I cannot see the explanation for 23d - I seem to have "Royal" as the answer to: Go to bed with common soldiers; get up with VIP (5)
I can see 'royal' as being a kind of VIP but a) expected the VIP connection to be read upwards and don't see how RO is common soldiers (though "lay" could be the 'go to bed.")
Could someone explain it for me, please?

Try RO the other way round - OR are "other ranks" or common soldiers
