My attempt this week as follows:

1) bird of passage

2) participles (but a little doubtful about it especially the American people bit)

3) savantes

4) tutee

5) staffer

Thanks very much, jolan.
Just 1, 4 and 5 this week. I don't feel too bad about the other two, though - 2 was way too clever for me, and I hadn't come across the feminine form of savants before.

Great stuff friends. Ari 5/5; Andy 4/5 etc. (Hi there Jazzy (x) ! Keep it up)

Thank you all for participating (too many to mention individually) Great bit of banter also,

Although ARI has played a blinder and there's no need for my 'workings', I'll append them anyway:-

1. “forbid” travelling (anag) = bird of; permit = pass; mature (v) = age; yielding
BIRD OF PASSAGE (fig) = a transient visitor (Chambers Dict).

2. British builders came first, second and third = b + u + m; in trips (stumbles) = stumble(bum)s = STUMBLEBUMS = (N. Am. informal) clumsy or inept people (COD)

3. insect = ant; preserves = saves; sav(ant)es = SAVANTES = learned ladies (Chambers. savant = learned person. fem = savante)

4. “tips” = t + u + t + e + e = TUTEE

5. subtractive anag (cancelled (do) & upset) of “trade-offs” – “do” = STAFFER (see Chambers D)

Bless you all

CU next week

John

All 5 again! I won't repeat what i said about "stumblebums" -- don't think I'm likely ever to hear that in use now! Thanks as usual to jolan for some real puzzlers, and bye till next week!
