I've nearly finished and have the theme etc, but the couple of hints above to 9 across have now thrown me completely. Am I just being a bit dense? I currently have (for 9 ac) ??o?s - is that wrong?

Having struggled on to the end, I just need a tip on the "palatable alternative", which I can't see at the moment. Has anyone unravelled that bit?
