Ha ha very good, pastille.
The know-it-all been-everywhere Boris-is-my-friend gent had already had desert, then!

Chrise, I didn't think Masterchef final was a cop out. I thought they might do that- neither made a single mistake in the final and they'd both been Fab-u-lous

Pastille's story reminds me of an evening centuries ago in a Welsh farmhouse where you had to buy your wine in advance & get it decorked. Next to us sat a posh young guy, Public School accent, trying to impress his "bird" by ordering the most expensive lobster etc. Then the waitress made a mistake & brought us his white wine: the cheapest & most horrible white wine (probably Liebfraumilch of course)!
Think I'll stay here on my limited pension & still enjoy good cooking without the sham (see above).................

...........in fact it's inspired me to order "Tubthumping". This kind of experience reminds me how much I must have missed out on in Britain over the last half-century, despite frequent visits (my godson studied in Leeds)& at least knowing the John Peel broadcasts...................

"Two Soups" is great -it was a good series altogether.
For our first wedding anniversary, we went to the Restuarant Elizabeth in Oxford, which at the time was in the Good Food Guide and praised by all. (Girls, I wore my new Anna Belinda, which I still have and can still get into!!)My husband went there the day before and asked if he could select the wine (red), pay for it and have it uncorked that evening. He had intended to chose a good one.

This was turned down, and with a sneer, I can't see for what possible reason. On the day we just had the house red. We never went back and the place closed later (not connected!)
