I'm still stumped by 17a & 23a. Think I'll sleep on them. Maybe some kind soul will have given me a hint or two by the morning.

Thank you, Mrs T, I've got them now. For 11a, think of a Cowardly song, so to speak: the original clue is two words (4,4). For 7d,which is a normal clue, think of a sailors' chant for the definition.

I am still struggling but I do have 7d.

The first and third words rhyme. Second and third words make up what you give someone when you give them a push.

Thanks for the clarification Crucible, hope I didn't sound too much of a curmudgeon for pointing it out.

Hi all,
thought I was almost there but reading posts I am still unsure of a few.
3d - E_S_A (proper name),
8d - L_E,_A_ _,
16a _E_ _ _ , and is Charlie's a drink and his place at the rear?
would love hints

3d - E_S_A not a proper name, first letter not E
8d - L_E,_A_ _ kind of associated with 11A (or women)
16a _E_ _ _ , and is Charlie's a drink and his place at the rear? see previous posts on this thread for lots of hints

oops, don't know what happened there.

So, I couldn't give up and now I've finished, but only with the help of you guys, so thanks.

I've also realised why I don't like this type of crossword: it reminds me of tedious parlour games at Christmas, when growing up.

Ah well, that's it for another month.

Can anyone explain the word play for 17A? The five-letter word (NOT the word that goes into the grid). I assume the first 3 letters = "mount", but I don't see the rest of it.
