I can't submit this darn thing because I am absolutely stuck on 8D. I have two words that fit, but make no sense. Hints?

17ac - the rest of the word is half of a word meaning "concealed boundary". It will make you laugh. 8dn - the wordplay gives you "thin ko...."

8D. Penny dropped! Bloody hell, what a word play! I was "convinced" that Broads was a red herring for "girls", "gals", etc. Thanks guys.

17A. Nah, I can't think of any "concealed boundaries" (thanks anyway!). It matters not, I have the answer, so I'll wait for the end of month explanation.

Why four more years? No real reason, my dear old ixion, it's just 'cos I was listening to the Obama speech at the same time as I typed my text.

8-)

I must say thanks and respect to everyone who has helped on here - and I'm still not finished!I'm plodding on, finding each clue tortuous even when virtually presented with the answer - but I do admit most of them are very clever. I suppose it's all about being on the same wavelength as the setter, and I'm clearly not. Crucible, if you're still out there, I would have found it more enjoyable if the letter count had referred to the original clue - would that make it too easy in your opinion?

Ok nearly there - please put me out of my misery. I just can't get 13a, which I think is a 'normal' clue. I have I-L-/V-A-. Have I gone wrong? Also, I'm afraid I STILL don't get the half of a hidden boundary for 17a. ixion, save me!
