14d Can anyone parse the last 5 letters of the answer or explain the last 7 words in the clue? I'd rather not reveal too much as the key to the whole puzzle would then be revealed!

Hi GK
I've only just started. I have got 1 across, though. Do both of its familiar crossword meanings feature?

Yes, chris!
Have received an explanation for 14d, but it's pretty weak, I find! See for yourself!
And thank you again for your help with the preliminaries on PR Thursday!

OK I've solved 14dn, but am also baffled by the last 5 letters - can you give a hint of your "weak" explanation?
(For those without the crossword, the clue is: 1 across's bottom half set on a stool, we hear? (9)
And 1 across is: Note down something in bed. (6)

chris: "butterc" is supposed to stand for "buttock", "up" for "on the stool"! Pretty far-fetched, don't you think -- worse than the pun in 1d (reminds me of my late brother torturing me at the breakfast table)........
And by my count that's FOUR times the substitute for "U" this week. Must be a nest somewhere (is that English or only German?)!

Yes, GK - butterc is terrible! I had only thought of "butt"
I just have 21dn left
Drink problem out of season, fate ensuing (6)

The only thing remotely close I can come up with is a grape variety, but I can't see any sense in the rest. Any hints?

Your guess is right: (sum-)mer + lot = fate!
