So where does the 'P' come from in 18D?

*** SPOILER ***

I have:

It could be bent = pliable
open = liable
after packing = ???

On a bright note my Mum has just heard she's the winner of last month's genius - so keep going everyone, it does happen to real people!

You've probably seen it by now livs...a one letter correct to packing gives P as abbreviated in Chambers.

SPOILER ALERT

If I've got them all correct, the letter changes are in 11a, 13a, 14a, 21a, 23a, 2d, 15d, 18d, 19d and 23d.

But if that is right, I'm not sure what it adds.

Harumph.

On a happier note, Azed gave me a VHC this month so I'm on top of the world! Perhaps one day the bookplate will be mine...

Well I only got a "HC" from Azed, which may explain why I'm stuck with this one: I've solved all the normal clues, got the "necessary condition", but can't fathom out the 16-worder around the perimeter....guidance sought....

Martin - re the clue in the preamble, pendragon's 'clocking' it was a bit of a hint. The def is in the first part.
