I think most people would say "reading material" nowadays but reading matter has the Chambers entry.

ORIEL

It has OIL spooning with the letters RE, but can't see yet where RE comes from
I'm looking for a word for shopping, and trying to subtract a word for WET BLANKET to leave me with RE

Shopping could be GRASSING or SINGING as in to shop someone to the law

That's meant to say parse.

By the way ixion, very romantic of you to have the letters spooning if I'm correct, but a great use of the wordplay there

Sorry guys not oriel, neglected to mention earlier that the answers are in alphabetical order, "window" is used in a very specific sense which is found in Chambers 11th Ed.

...as a further hint, you need to remove a word meaning "wet" as opposed to "wet blanket" - "blanket" describes how the word to be removed is positioned!
